Grammar Level N2

ないことには (nai koto ni wa): Unless a necessary condition is met

~ないことには (nai koto ni wa)

Meaning

Unless; without first doing

Formation and usage

Negative nai-form verb + ことには, followed by a negative result. Other forms: i-adjective ending in くない, or noun/na-adjective + でない + ことには.

Explanation

State a necessary condition: without the first action or state, the following result cannot be achieved. The second clause is often negative, such as cannot know or cannot solve. It does not claim that this condition alone guarantees success.

Examples

実際に使ってみないことには、便利かどうか分かりません。

Unless I actually try it, I cannot tell whether it is convenient.

本人に聞かないことには、理由は分かりません。

We cannot know the reason without asking the person directly.

材料がそろわないことには、料理を始められません。

場所が決まらないことには、案内状を送れません。

健康でないことには、長く働き続けるのは難しいです。

How related patterns differ

てからでないと requires completing one action before another becomes possible. ないことには states a necessary condition more generally. わけにはいかない emphasizes a restriction from duty or principle even when an action is physically possible.
