は抜きにして (wa nuki ni shite): Leaving an element aside

~は抜きにして (wa nuki ni shite)

Meaning

Leaving aside; without bringing something in

Formation and usage

Noun + は抜きにして/を抜きにして/抜きで, followed by what is done while leaving that element aside.

Explanation

Set aside an element, topic, or formality in order to focus on something else. Joudan wa nuki ni shite means joking aside. It does not necessarily mean permanently removing or rejecting that element.

Examples

冗談は抜きにして、これからの計画を話しましょう。

Joking aside, let us talk about our plans.

細かい説明は抜きにして、まず実物を見てください。

Leaving the detailed explanation aside, please look at the actual item first.

仕事の話は抜きにして、今日は楽しみましょう。

Let us leave work aside and enjoy ourselves today.

形式的なあいさつは抜きにして、すぐ会議を始めます。

We will skip the formal greetings and begin the meeting immediately.

先入観を抜きにして、相手の話を聞きたいです。

I want to listen to the other person without prejudice.

How related patterns differ

はともかく and は抜きにして set an element aside. Conjunctive もっとも adds a qualification and differs from the adverb 最も, most. はもとより and さらに generally add information rather than setting it aside.
