というものだ (to iu mono da): That is what one calls it

~というものだ (to iu mono da)

Meaning

That is what one calls; it is fair to say

Formation and usage

A phrase or clause + というものだ to make an evaluative judgment. Informally, という can become っていう.

Explanation

Make a firm judgment about the true nature or character of an action or situation. It is often evaluative, expressing praise or criticism. It is different from tame da for purpose and to iu koto da for reporting or summarizing information.

Notes

というものだ expresses an evaluation, unlike ためだ expressing purpose.

How related patterns differ

によると identifies an information source, and ということだ can report what it says. どうやら leans toward inference from signs, while というものだ evaluates the nature of something. Distinguish reported sources, inferences, and judgments.
