まさか (masaka): Surely not or never expected
~まさか (masaka)
Meaning
Surely not; never expected; it cannot be that
Formation and usage
まさか + clause + とは思わなかった, ないだろう, or はずがない. It can also stand alone: まさか!
Explanation
Express disbelief, surprise, or the view that something is very unlikely. It can also stand alone as an exclamation. Masaka does not by itself create an absolute negative; the ending and context establish the intended meaning.
