Grammar Level N3

てしようがない (te shiyou ga nai): An uncontrollably strong feeling

~てしようがない (te shiyou ga nai)

Meaning

So very; cannot help feeling

Formation and usage

Te-form verb, i-adjective ending in くて, or na-adjective + で + しようがない. The everyday contracted form is しょうがない.

Explanation

Express a powerful feeling or sensation that cannot readily be controlled, much like te shikata ga nai. In everyday speech, the form te shou ga nai is common. It does not always mean a lack of a practical solution.

Examples

新しい仕事が楽しみでしようがありません。

I am extremely excited about my new job.

長く歩いたので、足が痛くてしようがありません。

After walking for so long, my feet hurt terribly.

昨日から、その話が気になってしようがありません。

How related patterns differ

てしかたがない and てしようがない emphasize a strong, hard-to-control feeling. てたまらない suggests an unbearable sensation or intense desire. てならない often describes a feeling or thought arising naturally; do not confuse it with prohibitive てはならない.
